The BAR 003 was the successor to the BAR 002 and powered by the Honda RA001e for the 2001 Formula One season.

Jacques Villeneuve was the lead driver who was in his third year with the BAR team. Olivier Panis made up the pairing for BAR, who had been McLaren's test driver whilst he took a year out of racing as an F1 competitor.

The BAR display in 2000 had redeemed to some degree the dreadful showing in the team’s debut season in 1999. 2001 held high hopes for a continued improvement with regular podium shows and wins for the year. However, the team took a major step back as the car suffered from handling problems caused by the chassis lacking rigidity. Reliability suffered as the season unfolded, competitiveness was all but lost. Adding to the team’s woes were problems with the works Honda engines, which were down-on-power compared to the units of the top teams. To highlight the problems, rivals Jordan managed to outpace BAR with their EJ11 powered by the same Honda engines.

The limited success of BAR with Villeneuve's two podium finishes at Catalunya and Hockenheim, were largely due to both races suffering a high rate of non-finishers,  BAR eventually finished sixth in the Constructors' Championship, with 17 points.

The confirmed JORDAN drivers for the 2001 season were Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Jarno Trulli.

Unable to better their 1999 season, they were still able to beat other BAR teams that were powered by the same Honda engines.

Frentzen went on to be replaced by Frenchman Jean Alesi.
