The BAR 006 was powered by the latest Honda model, the RA004E and was officially launched at Circuit de Catalunya, Spain.
The cars was driven by Jenson Button and Takuma Sato, and the official test driver remained Anthony Davidson.
From the very outset the car proved extremely competitive with Jenson Button scoring ten podiums and challenging for the winner position on many occasions, with the Italian race one of the most exciting for many commentators. Despite the car's clear potential to be the winner, neither driver scored a win in the 2004 season, although a close 2nd was scored on 4 occasions.
The BAR Honda 006 was clearly the second fastest car at most races, however, Ferrari was having a good season and a long way ahead of its BAR rival, winning all but 3 races. BAR Honda 006 finished second in the season, 143 points behind Ferrari but 14 ahead of Renault. A positive consolation was coming second in the Constructor's challenge.
BAR Honda had a close fight with the Renault team all through the 2004 season. Jenson Button was tipped by many to be driver of the year, finished third in the Driver's Championship behind the Ferrari drivers of Rubens Barrichello and Michael Schumacher, Schumacher winning his seventh World Championship.
